Commercialization of Campus

In October, the GSAÉ Council voted to support a campaign with the following goals:

  • That the University of Ottawa exposes and lets the members debate its views on the place of the private enterprise in the academic institution;
  • That it defines clear ethical standards regarding the acceptation of private funding;
  • That it privileges the creation of students-managed spaces.
More information on the current partnerships between the University and the private sector will be posted during the year. In the meantime, we invite interested students to download the petition associated with this campaign. Filled petition sheets can be brought to the GSAÉD office (601 Cumberland St.).

Provincial Cuts to Student Grants: Take Action!

On May 1st, 2009, the government of Ontario announced that it would be eliminating the Distance Grant offered to students from remote areas, and that the Textbook and Technology Grant would not be offered to students who are ineligible for OSAP. The creation of these grants were among the electoral promises made by the Liberal Party during the 2007 elections.

Please write to Premier Dalton McGuinty and your MPP denouncing this decision:

Meeting with Provincial Ministers

Student representatives from the University of Ottawa met the Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities.

On May 28th, GSAÉD had a chance to have a discussion with Ministers John Milloy, Jim Watson, and Deputy Minister Yasir Naqvi regarding the current challenges facing post-secondary education in Ontario. A representative for Madeleine Meilleur was also present.

The meeting, coordinated by the Office of Minister Milloy and the Canadian Federation of Students – Ontario (CFS-O), allowed student representatives to tackle a variety of issues, notably the provincial financing of infrastructure, the needs of international students, the financing of Graduate studies and the commercialization of research. The students present took the opportunity to thank the government for the transfers that will allow the construction of the Vanier Tower at the University of Ottawa campus, while stressing the urgency for increased provincial funding that aims to reduce student debt and improve accessibility to post-secondary education in Ontario.
